Tamahagane, which in Japanese literally means "jewel steel" or "precious steel", is a type of steel made in the Japanese traditional way. Tamahagane is made by smelting iron sand in a clay furnace called "tatara" and mixing it with charcoal to produce steel with various carbon content. After the smelting process, the tatara is broken and the steel bloom or "kera" is broken and swordsmiths segregate and collect the steels with various carbon contents.

Ryan1180 is a katana or more specifically a handachi with a blade made of Chinese tamahagane. A handachi or "half-tachi" is a blade with tachi style fittings on the tsuka but has a saya that of a katana. The blade of this sword is hazuya-jizuya polished to bring out the beauty of the blade. The blade is honsanmai lamination, 1095 high carbon steel is the cutting edge,folded steel is the jacket steel. It is differentially hardened and has a visible hamon. The area between hamon and cutting edge is hazuya polished, so it looks differently. The dragon and flowers are engraved by hands. The tsuka is made of hardwood, it's wrapped with one-piece genuine rayskin and synthetic silk ito. The saya is made of hardwood and partially wrapped with unpolished genuine rayskin. The koiguchi, kojiri and kurigata are polished buffalo horns. The tsuba, fuchi and kashira are made of brass.

This is a beautiful katana with a shobu zukuri blade made of folded 1095 high carbon steel. Being made of 1095 steel means that this sword can be used on heavy targets without compromising its edge. Adding to the grain pattern or hada on the blade brought by the folding process is a beautiful horimono or engraving on both sides of the blade near the habaki.

This katana is intricately forged in the shihozume lamination structure. The edge is made of 1095 high carbon steel which has high hardness while the sides are made of folded steel which has high flexibility and has a beautiful grain pattern or hada. Iron is used to form the softer core of the blade. The shihozume lamination is a labor-intensive forging technique that requires high skill level on the part of the swordsmith. Imperfect fusion or welding of the different steel types on the blade can cause the blade to delaminate or split.

This katana is differentially hardened and has a visible hamon. The area between hamon and spine is hazuya polished, so it looks differently. There're double blood grooves on each side of the blade. The tsuba, fuchi and kashira are made of copper with silver decoration. The tsuka is made of hardwood and wrapped with one-piece genuine rayskin and black leather cord. The saya is made of hardwood and painted in glossy black, shells are used to decorate the saya.
